Imagine having to share underwear with your coworkers.

This is something that Disney Characters at Disney Theme Parks really had to do.

Lt’s talk about it.

What’s going down Mouse Nation, and welcome to another episode of Weird Disney, where we discuss the weirder and definitely stranger side of Disney.

And today we’re talking about something a bit on the gross side, so this may not be for the faint of heart.

We’re talking underwear, more specifically, shared underwear

Yes, underwear shared by Disney employees.

That’s right, communal employee underwear.

Did I say underwear enough?

Now imagine this, your favorite characters, Donald and Mickey, waving to everyone, giving everyone hugs.

Hug them now knowing they used to share underwear.

Now the question is, why. It seems so unsanitary and like something that would be totally against the law. But it wasn’t and this was normal for Disney Employees who had to dress as your favorite Disney Characters all the way up until 2001.

You see, They weren’t allowed to wear their own underwear from home.

Each cast member would be issued company jock straps, cycling shorts, or tights that they’d turn in after their shift to be washed with the rest of their costumes.

Then they’d come in the next day and be issued another set of undies.

The reason they’d have to use these company issued undergarments was because appretnly regular underwear would bunch up beneath the costumes and become noticeable to theme park goers.

Now I don’t have to to tell you how gross this can be having to share this underwear.

But I’m going to.

There were known cases of transmission of both scabies and pubic lice form this communal underwear.

Which is absolutely disgusting.

Disney Officials said that hot water was used to clean the underwear, but apparently this wasn’t true as cast members were complaining that the underwear was either stained for smelly.

ehhh yuck

Eventually Disney did sign a new contract with Disney employees and Union Teamsters allowing the cast members to be assigned their own pair of under garments and allowing them to clean the underwear themselves.

Sad that this needed to be a victory, but huge victory indeed for all costumed cast members.

I’m not sure I would have been able to share underwear with anyone else.

Both for my sake and theirs.
